Ananda Pagoda, Bagan
January 20th, 2009Ananda Pagoda was built by King Kyanzittha in 1105, Ananda is generally considered to be the finest of the Bagan pagodas. It was created after a description by 8 monks of the legendary beauty of the Himalayas. The architects were killed after completion so that it could not be replicated. It was partially destroyed by the 1975 earthquake but has been restored. Inside are four 9.5 meter images of the four Buddhas of our world cycle.
Myanmar follows the lunar calendar and so many of the festivals fall on full moon days. On the full moon of Pyatho, which is in January there is a very famous festival at Ananda Pagoda which continues for about 15 days and ends on the full moon. Many Burmese pilgrims gather at Ananda, stalls are set up serving various traditional food and snacks. Many donations of food, robes and other necessities are given to the monks.
